Artist's Description

A crescent moon rises above Portsmouth early Thursday morning, about an hour before sunrise. The dark portion of the moon can also be partially seen due to a phenomenon called earthshine, where sunlight reflected off the earth actually helps illuminate it. You can also make out Venus in the upper right of this photo! After doing a little more research, I believe that is Saturn visible just below and to the left of Venus.
